of paintings at the old mint in san francisco. they reflected scenes from that part of california. he took us down there and proudly showed us her work. although he traveled the world his family was always in his thoughts. california was always his home. what i will most remember about chris is how thoughtful he was and how people were drawn to him. chancellor wu wrote when chris was appointed ambassador, friends, professional acquaintances contacted me to encourage me to reach out to him. he was so well thought of. i sent a hand-written card and to my surprise he returned the correspondence with his own handwritten note. that would be very much like chris. he appreciated and enjoyed interactions with people. in fact, our friend chris highland put it very eloquently when he said, chris was the finest among us. more than his obviously charms, he was a man of substance and humility. at parties, dinners and gatherings he spent little times talking about himself and his accomplishments. only when he was forced to. instead he asked people about their lives, their views, their accomplishments. he a

that phone call. your family is safe, you are safe. i can do more work helping the people in san francisco than trying to get back right away. your family knows you are okay and you could be rescuing the city. having a family plan. twice a year we say, change your batteries in your smoke detectors and replenish your supplies with new food. your spouses say what are you going to do in a disaster? if you go to school, the school has a plan set in place. if a quake hits they will evacuate to certain areas. you will have to pick them up at a certain age. talk to your family. don't wait for a disaster. you should talk about it tonight. everybody in an event of a disaster meet in the front or back of the house. as soon as you know everybody is safe if you want to get something that's fine. as long as you know everybody in the family is safe and that person wants to use a garden hose to put out the fire. if you don't this is a possibility. a single story wood structure building is the safest to be in but has to be bolted to the foundation. everybody know where the water heater is. if you haven'

mean this in a technical way. san francisco-oakland area, there was a -- gun buy back. several different events. gun buy back events. they were planned before what happened here in newtown. but there were much larger crowds turning out than they had expected. you can see some of the evidence of what had been brought in. people were given $200 to bring in their zbns just hand them over to the authorities. ing the local reports say about 600 guns were turned in over the course of things event. some people saying to the authorities that they just needed to have those guns out of their homes. the president is calling for, quote, meaningful action on guns. many democrats are calling for strict new gun control laws. of course the assault weapons ban expired in 2004. there is some talk that maybe, maybe bringing that back would be a foot. the effect of what you saw in is an plan and oakland was different elsewhere. for instance, like arizona. some of the gun buyers in arizona became very afraid actually that this new national conversation, particularly my -- what happened this beautif
